SCOPE FELLOWS HIWOT & BROOKE SHARE GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH WORK AT GLOBAL WACh
In 2026, SCOPE alumni fellows Hiwot Weldemariam (2024) and Brooke Erickson (2025) shared their fellowship experiences and research at the Breakfast with Global WACh lecture series. Their presentation highlighted the growing role of implementation science and community-based research in addressing mental health challenges in conflict-affected Ethiopia. Their work lays a foundation for future faith-based mental health interventions in partnership with Ethiopian Orthodox faith leaders.

SCOPE 2026 Fellow Marin Strong was chosen as one of the University of Washington Husky 100, highlighting her leadership, commitment to health equity, and dedication to translating research into meaningful community impact. Through her work in nursing, epidemiology, and global health, Marin exemplifies SCOPE’s mission of fostering collaboration, innovation, and improved health outcomes both locally and globally.
Introducing the 2026 university of gondar SCOPE fellow
In 2026, SCOPE welcomed Belayneh Jejaw Abate as the University of Gondar SCOPE Fellow. An epidemiologist and public health researcher, Belayneh brings extensive experience in maternal and child health, infection prevention, and quantitative public health research. Through his commitment to evidence-based solutions and health equity, he has contributed to numerous research initiatives, trained healthcare professionals, and advanced public health practice in Ethiopia. As a SCOPE Fellow, Belayneh looks forward to collaborating with interdisciplinary partners to strengthen community-centered research and improve health outcomes both locally and globally.

SCOPE HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL SPRING FUNDRAISING EVENT & WINE TASTING
On April 21, SCOPE hosted its 5th Annual Spring Event and Wine Tasting at Tinte Cellars Georgetown Tasting Room, welcoming guests for an evening of community, conversation, and impact. The event highlighted the work of SCOPE fellows and showcased ongoing partnerships with faith communities in Ethiopia. We are so grateful to all who joined us and made the evening a success through their generous donations to SCOPE. And, save the date for our upcoming summer event coming in August, with more details coming soon!

CELEBRATING DIEUDONNE HAKIZIMANA’S PHD MILESTONE
Congratulations to Dieudonne Hakizimana (SCOPE Director, Programs & Grants) on earning his PhD in Global Health Metrics & Implementation Science. His dissertation defense, “Utilizing implementation science approaches to evaluate and guide scale-up of child health programs involving trusted local influencers in Ethiopia,” marks an important contribution to implementation science and global child health research.

SCOPE CELEBRATES BROOKE ERICKSON’S GRADUATION
Brooke Erickson, a former fellow from last year, graduated from the University of Washington Masters of Public Health (MPH) program this year. She will be heading to Stanford University as a Predoctoral Researcher with the Stanford Institute for Excellence in Survey Research, within the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences.
