SCOPE partners with medical and faith communities to improve health in Ethiopia through outreach, education, and training.

Kate is a recent graduate from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Affairs, where she received her Masters of Public Administration with a certificate from the Non-Profit Management Program in June, 2014.

Kate worked in Gondar, Ethiopia, from June to September, 2014. Her project focused on developing the cross-continental infrastructure of SCOPE, with an intent to define the various Ethiopian/American partnership roles and insure means of strengthening SCOPE’s partner relationships through improved communication and mutual accountability.

Kate’s interest in women’s health was cemented through her work with the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan. She was primarily stationed in Zharkent. Many children she worked with, infected in 2006 in a blood transfusion scandal, faced a public backlash upon starting school. Kate participated in PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) training to learn how to facilitate cross-cultural discussion about HIV and AIDS. She will bring these skills to Gondar to strengthen the spirit of communication between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the University of Gondar.

Kate received a dual degree in Political Science and Spanish from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2010, with a year abroad in Alicante, Spain. While a graduate student at the UW, Kate works at the University of Washington Medical Center as the Administrative Coordinator of the Department of Anesthesiology. She sings in the University Presbyterian Church Cathedral Choir, has worked with the Seattle Opera as a Development and Education Volunteer, and is an avid runner and backpacker.
